Established in 1742 from Hanover County, Louisa County was named in honor of Princess Louisa, daughter of King George II and Queen Caroline of England and wife of King Frederick V of Denmark. Its central Virginia location placed it in the midst of key events during both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
County Seal
The County Seal features Princess Louisa, dressed in a period-appropriate blue gown, holding white flowers. The gold depiction of Louisa County, set against a green background, reflects the high school colors at the time the seal was created. The tobacco plant on the right symbolizes Louisa County’s historical significance as the "Sun-Cured Tobacco Capital of the World." The dogwood flower, Virginia’s state flower, is displayed on the left.
